What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health disorder that was formerly known as manic depression. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that drastically affects a person’s moods in a way they cannot control. It causes people to have moods that swing from intense highs of mania or hypomania to extreme levels of depressive episodes. The cycles can take place every few weeks or months and cannot be controlled by the person experiencing them. Receiving professional care from bipolar treatment centers helps people learn to anticipate their symptoms and provide ways to minimize some of them.
There are different types of bipolar disorder, and it’s important to receive the right diagnosis. The types include:
- Bipolar I Disorder: the person has at least one manic episode that is either preceded or followed by a hypomanic or depressive episode.
- Bipolar II Disorder: the person has at least one major depressive episode and may have a hypomanic but not a manic episode.
- Cyclothymic Disorder: the person has several cycles of hypomania and depressive episodes. The depressive symptoms are less severe than those that occur with major depressive episodes.
- Rapid Cycling: the person experiences four or more episodes in the span of one year.
Other: the person experiences bipolar episodes brought on by events including serious medical situations or drug and alcohol abuse.

What to Expect At Our Bipolar Treatment Center?
All treatment at our bipolar treatment centers begins with a thorough assessment of each individual. This allows us to determine how bipolar disorder typically manifests in the person. From there, we can design a treatment plan that meets their specific needs. This treatment plan will include a host of types of therapy and any necessary medications that address their symptoms.
Causes of Bipolar Disorder
Mental illness can come about for more than one reason. Genetics can predispose a person to develop one, which makes knowing a person’s family mental health history important. Environmental triggers can also cause the onset of bipolar disorder.
For younger people with a genetic predisposition to develop bipolar disorder, including teenagers, stressful events can influence the beginning of their symptoms. These events include the onset of puberty, the death of a loved one, being abused or neglected, academic pressure, peer pressure, or bullying. For adults, triggering events can include being abused or assaulted, losing a loved one, job loss, divorce, or becoming a parent.
Signs and Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder
The signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder depend on what type of episode the person is experiencing. Common signs for someone in a mania or hypomania episode include the following:
- Hyperactivity
- Extremely talkative
- Excessive amounts of energy
- Racing thoughts
- Feeling agitated
- Difficulty focusing on activities or conversations
- Sleeping less often
- Engaging in risky behavior
- An exaggerated sense of self
- Psychosis
Signs someone may experience during a depressive episode include:

- Feeling hopeless
- Feelings of unexplained guilt
- Moodiness
- Insomnia
- Sleeping more than usual
- Crying
- Difficulty concentrating
- Trouble making decisions
- Loss of appetite or increased appetite

Quality bipolar treatment centers can assess a person to understand what symptoms they experience and what they indicate.
How Our Bipolar Disorder Treatment Center Works
New View Wellness in Atlanta provides bipolar treatment centers that help people understand their mental illnesses. We provide full assessments in order to provide the right diagnosis for which type of bipolar disorder the person has. From there, we match them with the right type of program to help them. Our treatment options include Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), Virtual IOP, and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP).
Outpatient programs require a person to visit our facility for treatment sessions during the day (or attend virtually). Because we are not a residential program, the person can enjoy the convenience of still living at home. Most people attend treatment for a minimum of 30 days. We assess them to see the progress they make and adjust the time frame as needed. All of our levels of care include multiple types of therapy that help treat bipolar disorder. In addition, we provide any necessary prescription medications and monitor the person for their effectiveness.
